SPJ: Journalists Often Face Stonewalling at Science Agencies, New Survey Finds

I don’t think anyone is suprised by this study but it is always nice to know you aren’t the only one having a hard time reaching supposedly open scientists paid with tax money to find the truth about the world in which we live.

It is frustrating to get sound-bites and pieces of data instead of entire studies and conversations with researchers about methods, outcomes and other possible reasons for data to look the way it does.

To be fair though, we as journalists need to do a better job of not simpling running with whatever data we find. We need to make sure people know corelation is not causation. We need to get three or four different opinions on what different research means, not one or two.

There are reasons scientists don’t like to talk to us. So let’s fix this and call them on their crap instead of just pointing fingers.
